SCAI Therapeutics Secures 13 Billion KRW in Funding, Accelerating 'Two-Track' Strategy in Novel Drugs and Beauty

SCAI Therapeutics has successfully secured 13 billion KRW in a Series C funding round. The company plans to utilize the newly raised capital to accelerate clinical trials for its flagship macular degeneration treatment and to establish a global mass-production system for cosmetic ingredients.

On the 9th, SCAI Therapeutics announced that it had closed its Series C funding round, raising 13 billion KRW. Key participants in this round included BonAngels and Solidus Investment (SolidX).

Founded in 2019 by CEO Chul-hwan Kim, who holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from KAIST, SCAI Therapeutics is a biotech company developing novel drugs and beauty ingredients based on its proprietary drug delivery platform, 'MOASIS.'

The company’s major institutional shareholders include IMM Investment, Stonebridge Ventures, Forward Equity, HB Investment, and Eum Private Equity. With this latest funding round, SCAI Therapeutics' cumulative investment has reached 54 billion KRW.

Developing Ophthalmic Therapeutics Based on 'MOASIS' Drug Delivery Platform

SCAI Therapeutics' core competitiveness lies in its independently developed drug delivery platform, MOASIS. Instead of chemically modifying molecules, MOASIS physically aggregates them to enhance solubility and permeability.

SCAI Therapeutics is diversifying its business by expanding the application of the MOASIS platform from ophthalmic drug development to the beauty and cosmetic ingredients sector.

First, SCAI-001, a dry eye syndrome treatment utilizing this technology, has successfully completed Phase 2 clinical trials.

SCAI-005, a treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration (wAMD), is being developed as an eye drop instead of the conventional intraocular injection to improve patient convenience. The company completed Phase 1 clinical trials last year and is now entering main clinical trials after receiving Phase 2 Investigational New Drug (IND) approval this May.

Business Diversification: From Novel Drugs to Beauty and Cosmetic Ingredients

SCAI Therapeutics has developed high-absorption cosmetic ingredients by applying its MOASIS technology to hyaluronic acid (SCAI-HA), PDRN (SCAI-PDRN for skin regeneration), and sodium deoxycholate (SCAI-NaDC for fat dissolution).

Through these efforts, the company recently completed the development of 'SCAI-RUVEX,' a sunscreen booster additive that reduces the required amount of organic and inorganic UV filters in sunscreens. By adding only a small amount, it overcomes the limitations of existing sunscreens, such as white cast and stickiness. The company is currently in discussions with several global companies regarding its commercialization.

With the newly infused 13 billion KRW, SCAI Therapeutics aims to expedite the commercialization of its clinical pipelines and achieve tangible revenue growth in the global beauty ingredients market.

An official from SCAI Therapeutics stated, "This investment validates the scalability of our MOASIS platform technology. We will focus on delivering tangible commercialization results in both the pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors."
